0nce a renowned spot for Balmain gamblers, a former RSL club has been transformed by designer Stephen Collins into a working space of simplicity and beauty. "It certainly has a notorious past," laughs Collins as he waks around the spacious office that was once a ballroom.
Commissioned by an advertising agency to create a work environment its staff could thrive in, Collins' first task was to overcome the oppressiveness of the light-deprived space and take advantage of its soaring ceilings.
"You really couldn't see any natural light at all from the main office space, there was just a general glow from around the atrium area. Apart from that, the light was completely fluorescent and had that feeling of coldness and dullness t-a- .-.a: cenmental to a creative profession,' explains Collins. His solution was to remove a wall at the back of the building and replace it with an expanse of steel framed glass. At the opposite end, 10 square double-glazed windows were inserted into the building's facade. The atrium above the conference room, originally the only natural light source, was rebuilt, as the wood had rotted.
