Designed by Sydney architect Iain Halliday (Darley Street Thai, Paramount and Anders Ousback's new restaurant, the Summit), Box occupies a slot in the streetscape beside Marriner's Regent Theatre.
Burley Katon Halliday was chosen for its work with a similar narrow space in Sydney: what has been created is a stark, bold design that turns convention on its head.
Downstairs, Box is a very public cafe-bar, above, it's a private restaurant. With the possibility of a fine view to Collins Street from the first-floor dining room, only the brave would turn their backs on it - as they have here.
The designers chose to construct a solid, cement facade featuring no windows, only spotlights on the wall to accentuate the "box-like" structure. And that sums up the design philosophy here: uncompromising.
The dining room is minimalist in lighting, decoration and flamboyance. A Japanese-inspired dried timber arrangement at one end creates a shadow play on a stark white panel and walls
Because the restaurant is long and narrow it provides only enough space for 2 lines of tables. Absolute symmetry was avoided by installing a single very long unbroken banquette seating down one wall.
The whole design holds itself together very tightly.
