The siting of the existing house between hill and sea, the passage of the sun and the direction of the wind create the possibiity for see-sawing living spaces, where the environmental factors such as time of day and time of year determine which spaces are occupied rather than plan.
The strategy of inversion was applied to the exisiting kitchen / courtyard arrangement.
By inverting their relationship the house seems to gain another room without increasing its area. The courtyard , surrounded by the high parapet limestone walls of the old kitchen, creates a private north facing outdoor 'room' which is read as an extensiuon of the kitchen, thereby also pulling light into the middle of the old house.
The windows accentuate the see-saw effect by framing the east view of the high horizon of the hill in contrast with the ground plane of the street seen through the long low window along the floor
The architectural expression of the street is analagous with a 'weaving' where the new horizontal timber batten wall weaves along the masonry of the 1950's garage addition at one end and curves behind a 1900's limestone parapet wall at the other - bringing the disparate elements together with a contemporary composition.
