The 2 apartments lie either side of a central dividing wall which slopes away to the rear.
The long and difficult process of demolition under "heritage" guidelnes eventually led to the need to recreate the form of the original house at the front of the site, witht he new townhouses grafted onto the rear.
The architects have carefully melded the old with the new eg the need to meld an old roof at the fron with a different roof type at the rear.
The issue fo orientation was an important factor in the design. The street front faces north with the rear of the block and views facing south. The intorduction of the saw tooth roof reverses the negative effects re sunlight and cross ventilation intot he rear section of the apartments. A stripof skylights along the boundary walls brings more daylight into the recesses of the building.Despite the obstacles of the council planning processes the architects have addressed the project in a sensitive and intelligent manner, completing a project that will enlighten the life of its occupants.
