The client required the consolidation of serveral departments onto a single level and the construction of a new reception and client meeting area. The directors had a strong attachment to their current office and wanted to maintain many of its existing qualities. Babcock and Brown's banking culture features a requirement of individual offices, with these being located against external glazing.
From the client's perspective, this project was not about renewal as much as expanding and already successful strategic position. The front of the house is oriented towards stupendous views over Sydney Harbour and accommodates a central, but skewed, access corridor to meeting rooms. The office planning moves the offices onto the internal walls and allows for an open plan work envionment to be agaginst the glazing. Joinery creates bays of four staff working on patallel desk. The material palette is maintained and enhanced with the addition of leather, used in the main circulation corridor and the reception area. A secondary front of the house materila, timber veneer, is applied in an almost monochrome tone to wall to wall and joinery to create a very cohesive feel. This forms a backdrop for the company's art collection, the neutrality of the tonal scheme demonstrating in the design response.
