The brief for BP's new travel centres was to meet Main Roads requirements for amenity and safety, while designing a facility that redefined the service centre and took BP Australia into the future.
The brief combined pragmatic and aesthetic issues- the centres had to be highly functional and efficient, and they had to promote BP's strong corporate identity and brand personality
5 new travle centres have been designed by Arkhefield in Queensland for BP.
2 different models have been developed
a) linear
b) vertical
Each travel centre incorporates a Bp Connect convenience store, interactive tourist information bureau, communications lounge, food hall , cafe, and truckers facilities.
"The grudge purchase of fuel should not contaminate the gratification purchase of food"
To overcome the pitfalls of linking the above functions it was decided to make the internal elements very unlike traditional experiences.
This has been achieved through the interior fitout being more in keeping with an airport lounge feel.
High ceilings, celestory windows, generously spaced seating, effective lighting, sophisticated graphics and well considered spatial divisions clearly differentiate these architecturally fresh travel centres from previous ancient service stations.
Ultimately, the centres had to create an economically viable retail environment for BP and its tenants- and a welcoming and rewarding environment for their customers.
