PROJECTS IN PERTH

To build a new house for a family who often hosts guests from overseas. The design needed to accommodate this extended family and guests, providing spaces where large groups could come together to enjoy a meal and socialise, as well as private spaces where people could take a break from the group.

This is a new house facing the Swan River in Applecross, Perth. The architects took their design inspiration from the verandah and divided the building into two wings linked by a hallway with a honed bluestone floor. A verandah-like wing on the west is enclosed by dramatic double-height . opaque louvres, while a more solid masonry wing on the east houses the kitchen, bedrooms, study and bathrooms. The 'verandah' is for living.

Here, the dining room and various lounge areas flow seamlessly into a simply landscaped outdoor space, with the northern end of the structure enclosing a portion of the garden, including a large frangipani tree. The translucent roof is striped with timber battens and the floors are a warm dark timber. Cross-ventilation cools the spaces while passive solar energy heats them. Set well back from the street, the house is designed to be surrounded by trees that have yet to mature and will be fed by bore water.
