PROJECTS IN SYDNEY

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY KRAIG CARLSTROM

The house is divided into 2 volumes -
1 for the owners and 1 for the guests.

Its figure is essential; a white volume with an overhanging copper roof and a measured sequence of terraces that contribute, with the large windows to integrate indoors with outdoors.

The central patio functions as a filter between the living area and the studio.

It features a pool and is surrounded by window glazings that regulate the internal micro-climate.

The service functions of the house are positioned laterally.

The house sits on a very narrow and steep block in Sydney fronting the water. Its neighbours are small 1950's pavilions and the new house elected to stay within the 'style' rather than opt for a more formalist solution. Council also imposed severe restrictions on roof slope and required that the existing parallel walls of the original building be retained. The long site is broken into two levels by a sandstone escarpment. The higher level fronts the street, the lower fronts the water. A platform of stone was established over the entire site with three pavilions laid across, creating a series of indoor and outdoor spaces on the 'same floor'. Access from the street to the main house is via steep stairs or an inclinator.
