An infill project on a vacant site of 209m2, the planning of this project revolved around providing space for a family of four, whilst not overpowering the dominant character of the area. An ‘upside down' solution to a common problem, living areas are clustered on the first floor with tree top views to the north and roofscapes to the south. Large terraces and courtyards are designed to provide visual and physical extensions to the living zones
and bring light in to the long, narrow house. Maximum flexibility has been designed in with large sliding panels providing separation between playroom and living areas upstairs, and opening to consolidate downstairs bedrooms in to a playspace. Cooking, studying and entertainment functions are grouped on the west wall with joinery designed to either conceal, in the case of the study, spare bed and laundry downstairs, or to be unobtrusive, in the case of the linear kitchen. This house continues our exploration of the concept ‘appropriate space rather than maximum space'.
