Bates Smart

INTRODUCTION

Bates Smart: 150 Years of Australian Architecture charts the development of a nations' architecture through the work and personalities of a single architectural practice.

The book took Professor Goad and three other Melbourne University professors three years to research and write. Featuring the practise's journey from 1853 to this millennium, the book showcases rare photographs, sketches and essays charting the trials and triumphs of its people and projects both in Australia and overseas.

From Joseph Reed in 1853 to Bates Smart today, this Melbourne headquartered firm has realised buildings of great distinction and at every scale: from houses, hospitals, schools and universities to some of Australia's largest public projects like the Royal Exhibition Building and the Crown Entertainment Complex.

Featuring stunning drawings and photographs.

The list of other awards won by Bates Smart in Melbourne includes the Town Hall (1867), the World Heritage listed Exhibition Building (1880), Scots Church (1873), ICI House (1956), and the Melburnian apartments (2001). And in Sydney they have received awards for the MLC Buildings (1933 and 1957), Toyota headquarters (2000), Murdoch Magazines headquarters (2000) and the multi-award winning Headquarters Training Command ??? Victoria Barracks. In the past two years the practice has won more than fifteen awards for design and environmental sustainability.

The high detail of both text and pictorial presentation inside Professor Goad???s latest book will appeal to any aficionado of contemporary and historical architecture as well as lovers of art and design. Other notable contributors to the book include Professor George Tibbits, Professor Miles Lewis and Dr Julie Willis from the University of Melbourne
